This evocative drama chronicles a father–daughter relationship, reflecting on the moments that foster it and the many factors that can tarnish it.
We follow Sophie (Francesca Corio) who is holidaying with her father, Calum (Paul Mescal, Normal People), a young dad who is joyful, loving, and supportive. As time moves forward, Sophie notices his moods beginning to shift. It is only years later, processing her hazy childhood memories and holiday footage, that she begins to understand that the father she thinks she remembers is a man she never really knew.
Co-produced by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), this dynamic narrative feature debut from filmmaker Charlotte Wells offers a remarkable deconstruction of family. A naturalistic script is paired with enigmatic performances from Mescal and newcomer Francesca Corio who is magnetic in the central role. Punctuated with a 90s pop soundtrack and hypnotic cinematography, Aftersun offers a slow burn treasure trove of emotion that will linger with you long after the final credits roll.
