Twelve-year-old Mully (Charlie Reid) has recently lost his mother and upon discovering his debt-ridden father has stolen charity money raised in her name, Mully flees the scene in a stolen taxi. There he finds a woman, Joy (Olivia Colman, The Crown, Mothering Sunday BFF21), passed out in the back seat with a baby. It is soon revealed that Joy, an inadvertent mother, has decided to give her child away to a friend and leave the country.
This odd couple road movie follows the mismatched pair as they sent off on the ultimate trip of self-discovery where they will find friendship and a happier way to journey through life. Propelled by the two central performances, the film delivers an impressive debut from young Reid and offers further confirmation of Colman’s brilliant ability to embody a character. The fiction debut from Emmy-winning documentarian Emer Reynolds is powered by its lead performances and touching narrative.
Filmed in the glorious southwest of Ireland, Joyride offers a warm, funny and touching story about motherhood, friendship and acceptance.
