What if a legal system fails to recognise unspeakable crimes?
Fresh-off-the-boat attorney Caspar Leinen (Elyas M'Barek, also in this year’s Nightlife) finds himself confronted with a spectacular case when appointed by the court as defence counsel for 70-year-old Italian Fabrizio Collini (Franco Nero). Collini, who has worked in Germany for more than 30 years as a model citizen, has for no apparent reason killed the respected industrial magnate Hans Meyer in his Berlin hotel suite.
For Caspar the stakes are high. This is his first big case as a defence lawyer and the victim is the grandfather of a romantic interest from his past (Alexandra Maria Lara) who was like a father to Casper, whilst his adversary is a legendary criminal defence lawyer (Heiner Lauterbach). As Caspar dives deeper into the case, he is not only confronted with his own past, but also a vast conspiracy and a truth that nobody wants to hear.
Based on the best-selling novel by the same name by Ferdinand von Schirach, director Marco Kreuzpaintner delivers a thrilling drama about a major judicial scandal in the German justice system.
