Based on the true story of director Adrian Goiginger’s great-grandfather, this Festival gem is a moving tale of an extraordinary friendship between a young soldier and a fox cub.
In the late 1930s, introverted young soldier Franz Streitberger (up-and-coming star Simon Morzé) is a motorcycle courier for the Austrian Army who is soon drafted into the German Wehrmacht, following the annexation of Austria in 1938.
Early in the Second World War, Franz, a strange outsider in his company, encounters a wounded fox cub. He decides to nurse it back to health and looks after the animal as if it were his own child. Through his unique friendship with the wild animal, his own past as an outcast farmer's son slowly catches up with him and the two begin a dangerous journey that takes them to occupied France.
A profound and heartbreaking story of unyielding human-animal friendship, Adrian Goiginger’s second film The Fox brings a new and personal perspective to this time of turmoil.
