“A big-hearted, life-affirming, musically sumptuous film.” The Hollywood Reporter
Bursts of song and dance ooze exuberance in filmmaker Tony Gatlif’s celebration of wanderlust and free-spiritedness, tied together by the rebetiko music subculture and a captivating female lead.
Defiant and lusty Djam (Daphne Patakia) lives a stifled existence on the island of Lesvos with her stepfather, restaurateur and music-man, Kakourgos (Simon Abkarian), who is teetering on financial ruin in the wake of the economic collapse.
Tasked with a mission to Istanbul to find an engine part for their boat, Djam sets off on a road-trip where she is joined by troubled French teen Avril (Maryne Cayon). Chance encounters, unexpected digressions and sudden musical interludes are left in their wake as they journey to Turkey and back again along the trail taken by many Syrian refugees.
“It is impossible not to be left enraptured by this bright heroine.” Cineuropa
